The Odor of Violets (American Mystery Classics) by Baynard Kendrick
Meet Captain Duncan Maclain. Blinded in the First World War, Maclain made up for his lack of vision by sharpening his other senses and mastering the subtleties often missed by those who see only with their eyes. Aided by his dogs Schnuke and Driest, he made a name for himself as New York City's most sought-after private detective. And now, in the early days of WWII, he finds himself working for Uncle Sam once again.
The murder of an actor in his Greenwich Village apartment would cause a stir no matter the circumstances but, when the actor happens to possess secret government plans, and when those plans go missing along with the young woman with whom he was last seen, it's sensational enough to interest not only the local police, but the American government as well. Duncan Maclain is on the case, but to solve it, he'll have to confront a world in which treasonous men and patriots are indistinguishable to the naked eye.
Reissued for the first time in over half a century, The Odor of Violets is a classic hybrid of mystery and espionage featuring one of crime fiction's earliest disabled detectives.
Baynard Kendrick (1894 - 1977) was one of the founders of the Mystery Writers of America, later named a Grand Master by the organization. Kendrick wrote for pulp magazines under pseudonyms before creating his most famous character, Duncan Maclain.
